Jumper, the Movie

They actually made a movie of the Steven Gould novels, and it doesn't look too bad. At least the first part is closely based on the first book. We'll have to order the other two and see how much they made up.

Holy... WOW! Way to go Steve! Local boy makes good!

I ran into the kitchen to tell Melva about it, and it turned out that she already knew that they were going to make a move of Jumper because she saw it on the book cover when the re-released the book! But she forgot to tell me about it!

From the brief glimpse I got in the trailer it looks like they might have punched up the dramatic use of the main character's ability, but well within the spirit of the book. I have a feeling that this will be good stuff!

Miros1 12-26-2007 12:53 AM

I'm wondering how much of the "Jumper Taskforce" stuff is made up, as well as the "genetic inheritance" idea...

But we'll be ordering both books tomorrow on our trip to the bookstore...

Greg 12-26-2007 01:19 AM

It looks like they took Steve Gould's idea and expanded on it. In the original book, there was only one jumper. In the movie it seems they have lots of them, and of course the hackneyed plot of an evil government agency dedicated to killing jumpers.

Miros1 12-26-2007 01:44 AM

Actually, there are 3 books. Another about David, and a third about someone named "Griffin." I'm hoping this other stuff is in the second or third books, and not made up by the script writer. That peeves me to no end.

I might have to go pack Phil's incision again...

On the jumperthemovie site, did you click on the US flag? Sends you into this big Flash presentation, and one link, "Books," sends you to http://www.tor-forge.com/SearchResul...?search=jumper

Did Melva "forget" to order them too?

Greg 12-26-2007 01:04 PM

Oh! I was unware that Steve had written a sequel to Jumper!

Yeah, I went through all the stuff on the Flash site. Lots of flash; near zero actual content.

Miros1 12-26-2007 04:48 PM

We checked the bookstore; not in stock. Will have to go back with the ISBN numbers -- ordering is much smoother that way.

Greg 12-28-2007 12:42 AM

Now that I know that the movie book is a new story, I'll have to read it! :D

Miros1 12-28-2007 06:10 AM

Well, in the trailer, they showed David crashing through ice and Jumping away, so it's apparently a combination of the two David books...

Greg 12-28-2007 05:56 PM

It would make sense to write the story line from the beginning, starting with a mundane hero and then throwing him head first into the weird world of jumping before building from that point.

Miros1 12-28-2007 09:59 PM

For the enlightenment of the people wondering what Rose and Greg are chatting about...

On Feb 14th or 15th, a movie called Jumper will open. It's based on the book, Jumper, by Steven Gould. Assuming the scriptwriter didn't exercise more creativity than the original author, go see it!

Greg 12-29-2007 03:31 AM

Better yet, check your local bookstore for Steve's books and read it! I haven't read the sequels yet but I thought his original Jumper book was excellent. So is the one where he sends his characters off into a pristine ice-age world... can't remember the name of that one at the moment.

Oh, and note that Steve Gould is not Steven J. Gould. SJ Gould is dead. To the best of my knowledge, Steve Gould is still very much alive.

Amusing anecdote: Once upon a time at Aggiecon, I taught Steve how to make ping pong ball bombs. He told me later that he had used that in one of his stories, but I don't know which one.

Miros1 12-29-2007 04:48 AM

The ice-age book is Wildside.

Unfortunately, our local bookstore has none of the Jumper books in stock...

Greg 12-29-2007 12:27 PM

Right! Wildside was a really fun book!

If you mention to the bookmongers that a movie is coming up, I suspect that they will be eager to stock Steve's stuff! :D

Miros1 02-17-2008 08:39 PM

Just saw the movie. It's a combination of Jumper and Griffin's Story. Wasn't bad, wasn't quite Jumper (but close enough).

The one thing I really didn't like was they made David's mother one of the "Jumper killers."

Greg 02-18-2008 12:03 AM

Aw, darn. I thought Hollywood had outgrown that parental hatred stuff.

Miros1 02-18-2008 05:18 AM

He doesn't hate her. He actually risks going to her house to see her at the end. It worked if you hadn't read the first book. Maybe I'll like it more when I've read the Griffin book.

Miros1 03-04-2008 12:17 PM

Semi-bad news. Griffin is actually a spin-off from the movie. Author's Note at the beginning sez so. However, it's still a good read. And he cliffhung it, which means there will be a fourth book unless he's a sadist.

Greg 03-04-2008 05:48 PM

The book Griffin is a spin-off from the movie, Jumper?

Miros1 03-04-2008 06:30 PM

Yep. The most annoying thing to me is that instead of doing the "Jumper shaped cutout" as the teleport effect, the movie introduced "jump rot" which is a sort of transdimensional shimmer, and bits of objects around the jumper can get sucked through.
