Spore Board

Is anyone else visiting boards for the game Spore?

The one I'm going to is http://www.xspore.com/ but I have no idea how helpful people are there.

I'm having a crash-after-evolving at Creature stage and hubby wants to play in his own universe...

Well, XSpore.com seems to be down, so I guess that wasn't a good board to post on!

One thing I did discover is that the easiest way to set up an XP or later computer for multiple universes is to simply make different user accounts. If you don't want to bother with that, go to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data and rename your Spore folder...

Still looking for a solution to my crashing problem!

I haven't yet tried playing Spore. Am I reading it this correctly? You can only have one universe? Does that mean you can only create on species of critter and try to get it to evolve?

Miros1 09-14-2008 02:33 PM

There are multiple worlds in each universe, but hubby didn't want my worlds on the screen while he's playing. He can't see too well, so he doesn't want to accidentally click one of them and suddenly realize he's playing Mirovians instead of Vogons. That's why I had to figure out how to have multiple "universes"!

BTW, I'm Miros1 on the EA server, where you share your creatures, buildings, vehicles, etc. I've got our games set to only download stuff from our "Buddies," to try to avoid a lot of the drek that I'm sure populates the server.

The latest iteration of EA's copy protection is rather annoying... 3 installs total (so you don't want to reinstall unless absolutely necessary).

Even more annoying (and contradictory to the manual, which Maxis employees are claiming is a misprint) is that you can only have one account on EA's server per registration number. When hubby's ready to post his Vogons, they'll be on the Miros1 page!

Ah well. My impression is that Spore is on its shakedown cruise.

Aren't you glad we don't build spaceships that way?

Is Spore the game with the monsters?

Considering that each shuttle was basically hand built and rebuilt for each mission, doesn't that make every trip a shakedown cruise?

I guess you'd call them monsters... Basically, you start as a single celled organism, and evolve into something else!

Greg 09-16-2008 01:02 AM

It's true that every Shuttle flight is unique but the basic vehicles are all the same with some variations within the fleet. So... no, I wouldn't say each flight is a shakedown cruise. They're probably more analogous to a delivery flight for the Military Airlift Command than for commercial airliners, but the key point is that most of the knowledge from previous flights is applicable to the new flights.

Coco, if you're thinking of the critters I made with the Spore Creature Creator when it came out, yup, that's the same program. I haven't played the whole game; didn't even know that you started with a single-celled organism.

Rose, can you direct the evolution of the little critters as it goes along?

Miros1 09-16-2008 04:15 AM

Yep! The guide is a big help too, both by telling you stuff before you learn it the hard way, and by suggesting "themes" for your creatures.

When you start, your creature has a flagellum to move and eyes to see with, and either a carniverous or a herbivorous mouth. Your first job is to eat 5 things (meat or plants), then to kill or find the corpses of the 6 creatures that will give you the other 6 parts.

Basically, you take your water based critter, stick legs under him (or her) and walk up onto the land. All the water based parts switch to land based functions, and you swap them with new parts as you fight or make friends with other creatures.

Here's the really scary part: When your creature is going to mate (i.e. go into the Creator section to evolve to your new selection of parts), the pair of them fart hearts like a pair of Sims!

Greg 09-16-2008 05:46 PM

So if you play it right, then your critter gets the opportunity to add new body parts?

Kaylyn 09-16-2008 09:27 PM

You collect body parts by killing or socializing with other creatures and by stumbling across them in the environment. When you send out your mating call and find your mate, you get the opportunity to add any new parts you found.

That sort of makes sense. It reflects how creatures evolve new forms by competing with other creatures in their environment.

OK I got to get Spore now. This sounds like fun!!!! :D
