I've used the following two methods to try to add a greenhouse to a regular house on a foundation:

1) Build the greenhouse on the ground right up against the back of the house. It's impossible to get the roof on!

2) Build the greenhouse on a foundation or a porch. The roof goes on, but you have to use move_objects to put the plots on the floor, then the Sims can't plant in them!

The only fully functional method I've seen is the one on the O'Mackey house where there's a little "airlock" with steps between the ground level greenhouse and the house on the foundation.
