Oh sweetheart. Not Vista! Not a problem. Click this pretty blue link. http://www.mozilla.org Download the latest version of Firefox and Thunderbird. Install them, and let them take over as your "default" web browser and email program. You still need to use IE for MS system updates, but that is all. Or you could download and use Sea Monkey, that does the lot in one program, and they are all totally free programs. Free as in air, beer, love etc. The companies that create "free" software usually make their money by selling the top shelf product to the corporate sector, and give the standard version away to us for free. Isn't that nice? This is not the "politically correct" meaning of the "Free Software Foundation", but it is the end result for you and me. Another very good program I use to replace MS Office is Open Office. http://www.openoffice.org And for all graphics, photo's, drawing, I use a program called Gimp. http://www.gimp.org Did you like the movie Shrek? The people who made that movie used Gimp to draw and animate it. Pretty damned good for a freebie eh? |

okay, i'll just have to jump in here and hold my nose, one last question, if i do this, and can't figure out how to get on-line again, is there a way for me to reverse the process and find IE again? as far as Vista is concerned, it's unfortunately the only one available on the market at this moment and my trusty ol' puter just didn't like my kids can't figure out why that would be

Yes, you can find IE again. If there isn't an icon on your desktop or in your quick-launch bar at the bottom of the screen, it will be there under Start > All Programs > Internet Explorer.
You can always switch back to using IE as your default web browser if you decide you want to.

Like he said.
Vista also keeps a check on itself, it sets what are called system restore points when you install new software or change settings for any reason. If it all goes "legs up" (an Aussie term for "all buggered up finished" which is New Guinea Pidgin English for "look out we're gonna crash"), just tell Windows System Restore to "roll back to last known good configuration". All fixed. |

So it's impossible to turn off that "feature" of Vista???
I hate "System Restore" on XP! It's the first thing I disable when I get a new computer. Viruses are worrysome enough without giving them a protected breeding ground! (Obviously, I'm still an XP user- no intentions of "upgrading" to Vista until it becomes mandatory- but I was just curious...)

Yeah, I don't need the operating system to protect my computer from me. Just protect it from other people and their freaking destructive software!

ya know, sometimes it's a really good thing there are no people looking at each other yet, i blush really bad when i'm embarrassed, or whatever, but i can't believe how simple this stuff is once you get to digging into it...why does it come across so intimidating?...Firefox is quite a bit slower than IE, and i'm having a problem getting it to download for me right now, but i found a post on insim by Miros where they were having the same trouble so i'll try some of those suggestions sometime... Thanks for all your help people, won't be here for a while, i'll miss seein' what's up...Take care of yourselves...

Now I'm experiencing another anomaly on Insim. This thing keeps popping up that wants to install some software. It replaces Insim in the window so if I close the window I lose the site.
It's really annoying because so far this has ony happened when I was in the middle of posting a message and did a preview.

Weird, I'm not getting that! Probably something from an ad, and I'm protected by having 3rd party crap turned off. I haven't done a Preview yet today tho.
I did notice that the ads aren't as porn as they were. Guess all the complaining paid off! |

Thought there was something wrong with my connection for a bit, as I wasn't experiencing any of these problems. Gotta love FireFox...

Yeah, I keep finding things to turn off. Today I turned off pop-ups from Insim and added *://*.adbrite.com to my list of Restricted Sites. My Restricted Sites zone has everything turned off, except for the phishing filter and pop-up blocker.

Hey, ya'all. That's exactly what happened to me before i was completely locked out of insim, and then about two weeks later the whole system crashed...since i've been on firefox, haven't had one problem in there...but also did as Miros said and turned off all third party stuff...

That sounds like another testimony for the Miros Method.
Completely blocking adbrite.com was just variation on the theme. I have been having difficulty getting to Insim's server all evening today, so don't worry if it's not behaving.
