Today in Space Flight
For your amusement: Today, July 16, is the 41st anniversary of the launch of Gemini X.
Gemini X Launched July 18, 1966 Gemini X is shown approaching its Agena target vehicle, a critical milestone in developing the ability to rendezvous and dock. Photo: NASA. From the JSC Digital Image Collection. For me, the Gemini program was the best part of the whole manned space program. On the other hand, just three years (minus two days) later... hoo boy... Apollo 11 Launched July 16, 1969 Photo: NASA. From the JSC Digital Image Collection. The Apollo flights to the moon ended when Apollo 17 splashed down on December 19, 1972. Neither man nor robot has landed on the moon since then.

Ohhh... tell me about it! Around the time of Gemini X, I was in an astronomy club in Galesburg, Illinois. I was in high school, and one of the physics professors at Knox College was a member of the club. I still remember the night he came in with pictures of the new Apollo module and said, "Look at this thing! It's a hotel by comparison to Mercury and Gemini!"
