I see who's really running the farm. The humans are just there to haul the bales...

Yep. You've got it.

That's why your The Goddess for Life.

I have found a small problem with Second Life.
Home security can be haphazard.

And there are jerks in VR as well as Real Life. Jerks are jerks.
Good thing I have a good buddy, in the head of security.
Gonna get me a "teleporting" home security system.
Out into Orbit with you jerk.
About 1.5 seconds from detection, whammo in orbit.
I accidentally stepped over an invisible line, didn't know, new in town.
It's effective, I'll give it that.

Does that mean that in Second Life, people can break into your place and steal things?

I think it's an "intruder detector," people can be annoying without stealing.

Oh! So the "Intruder Detector" is a gizmo to eject people from your lot, not a guard against thieves.

No they can't usually steal things. Most people want, and get, homes in SL for privacy* - and there are plenty of jerks, yes. As well as the Sims-who-you-used-to-go-out-with-and-just-wanna-kick-over-your-bin.
or their SL equivalents.

*as in, a quiet place to change your clothes?

Greg.

Usually, at best, all they can do is take a copy of what ever.
But, even then, only if the creator has made the item copyable.
Copy\Modify\Transfer are the 3 attributes of the creators tool kit.
Items are then made as freebies or for sale.
They can't actually "steal" in the normal sense.
At best (or is that worst) is an "ooh, I like that, I think I'll copy that" state of mind.

It is simply, they enjoy screwing with other peoples heads.
They're jerks, plain and simple. But, they are to laugh at.
Just people with juvenile minds up to no good. Annoying mainly.
They can't actually do anything to "hurt" anybody, they are just annoying little jerks.

And Sita is right, about the inherent human need, for some modicum of "privacy".
That is why, I spent the princely sum, of less than US$35 to buy a block of land and put a house on it. Less than a Sims 2 upgrade pack.
And, I'm making friends from all over the world.
I don't know about you Sita, and others, but to me, SL has a value Sims2 never can. Real people. An immediate contact with other human minds.
And I can get over the idiots.
I now have a friend with an SL gun shop.
And "she" yes she, is another Aussie. Lives in the US.
Nice girl, pays well to stay in her good books.

Then there are the admin rights of the "sim owner".
Got the correct name? Do some checking first.
Not that hard, every movement in and out of the sim is logged.
Complete ban from the sim is immediately enacted. Never gets back in.

In my humble opinion, trolls actually do harm to people on the net. The world of the net exists only as words and pictures and that is what trolls seek to destroy.

While it is true that trolls have no power that their victims don't give them, the ability to simply ignore them is a trait that very few people have.

That's why I have a policy of zero tolerance for that sort of behavior here and often I will encourage people who just need to vent to do their venting on someone else's board.

I want Sun Sims to be a happy place!

Yes, Greg. Trolls and nuisances are a pain BECAUSE they cause distress to other people on the Net. It's about reputation, IMO, but also about timewasters, like spammers.
And yes, the landowner's rights in SL are very important. SL is a GAME> If I don't like someone, I don't play with them. Simple as that.
One day last week in SL, my av Elspeth and her/my SL boyfriend were having a nice cuddle in Elspeth's latest house. Great. Till I looked up and saw a guy SITTING right outside the window, and presumably watching. (Even if you close the blinds, it is possible to see what is happening if you are clever with the camera controls).
Boy, that guy got booted so fast his head is still spinning! And I have a scanner so I picked up his name and he now has the dubious honour of being one of the only 2 people banned from my land, along with a trolling newbie that irritated me.

Shorty I have to come see you and find this friend and her shop - I LIKE weapons shops, though I very rarely shoot anyone. Does she have a good rocket launcher?

Hey all! Haven't been able to Sim, or dig into creations much lately, but here I come to visit, and find the lot of you traveling the world under new circumstances, all sounds interesting...my computer, is nothing short of a waste of good money, i bet the graphics in that place could be mighty tough on ones' machine...I can hardly keep my Sim game running when I play. Seems Greg has all under control here, so nice seeing you all again!

I agree absolutely Greg. I'm sorry if I have upset you in any way.
The reason I am a member of this forum is the people here.
Believe me, I would not be here otherwise.

When it comes to words, I have the older fashioned opinions there I suppose.
I recall what Great Granny taught us as kids.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones.
But, names will never hurt me?"

I actually do see the world that way. I may be a lucky one, in that respect.
Doesn't mean I don't get annoyed or what ever, but I seem to be able to get passed it in a way many others these days just can't. And it works.
It really burns the dills up, the trouble makers and trolls, to find the harder they try, the harder we laugh.

Something I have found in my wanderings, is some very interesting creations.
The settings and scenery is superb. Medieval towns and mean city street layouts. The imagination and creativity of the people is astounding.

The sailing ships people are building are quite impressive. Hulls creak and groan, sails flap, gulls shriek. And, the oceans actually have wind and waves.
Although I did find one ship that badly needs it's bilges pumped. Groups of friends can hire time in certain sims and go to sea for battle. Pirate's Cove is one such place. Fun too.

Functional Office tower buildings and highrise apartments. All rented out.
People actually living and working in the cities.

The NASA CoLab is fascinating. All NASA's feeds come direct to the lecture halls, the museum site is huge. Everything ever launched, is sitting there on its launch pad. You have got a great mechanno set.
Some of those things you guys sent up are HUGE. Everything is proportional, in true scale, standing beside those rockets on the launch pad is impressive.

G-day FredsG, we haven't heard from you for a while.
All well over your way I hope?

Sita, no worries.
I'll send you a "tp" landmark, next time I notice you are logged in.
Drop in any time. Most island residents are about the same age, that is, ahem, "not quite yet senior citizens".
Saturday our time, afternoons for me, there is usually a party on the beach. Friday evenings US west coast time.
It might be a little rowdy for a week or two. The hotel, on the hill behind my home, has been booked by a college for Spring Break.
It's a swim team and cheerleaders. I met the coach the other night.
I bribed him. I gave him a waverunner. He likes me.
I won't be disturbed by the youngens.

Hi, Shorty! So that's what you've been doing all this time!

I was testing this because a new Suns Sims member found that she couldn't post, and I'm trying to figure out why. At the moment, I'm totally stumped. I thought maybe her registration got messed up but she shows a member of the "Registered Users" group. The only other thing I could think of was maybe her login is timing out, which it tends to do on vBulletin if you don't click the "Remember me?" box when you log in.

Yep, gotta keep that, remember me, box checked.
It caught me out a few times.

Maybe a reminder note, on your login page?
Mind you, that's why I let your server remember my login and pwd.
I usually can't.

Oh, and yeah.
We two, found we had a lot more in common, than just Sims 2.

No worries. The "remember me?" box just tells vBulletin to set a cookie on your computer. Then your web browser sends that cookie every time you access a page on this site. vBulletin compares the login information in the cookie with the session ID and that's how it knows that you are you.

Got the roof back on the bathroom just in time.
The last cyclone of the season, came all the way down our west coast, then joined company with a "Buster" sweeping the southern ocean.

Woohoo.
Man, it's raining. Rain glorious rain.
Gutters overflowing with beautiful sweet clean rain water.
Rain falling on the cropping paddocks.
Rain going into tanks and dams.
It's glorious.

Now all we are doing is waiting to see if it keeps up.
(see me trying to cross all appendages at once.)
If it hangs in till April 25 or there abouts, we should have a decent rainfall this year. We might even see a crop to harvest.
At least that is what all the old chaps say.
And I'll listen to an older more experienced voice before any one somewhat younger than me.

Not joking friends. Last year our winter rains failed to come, and we all just stood and watched our planted crops die from lack of rain.
Not a thing we could do. Been hand feeding our livestock for 8 months.

ZW, that's probably why I don't go to any BBS thingies.
Way, too many silly teenagers, with silly ideas, for me to be involved in.
Erm wow. A Chuck Berry line, song title?
Too Much Monkey Business.(for me to be involved in).

Sorry, I seem to have digressed.
Did notice the EA site had a blurb for Sims3.
Sadly, it seems little more than S2 with Vista like appetites for GPU time.
Of course, I could be wrong.
As for EP's to S2. Racking the old grey matter, I think I recall seeing 10 EP slots, written into the deep dark depths of Sims2.
Some xml file from memory. Don't have S2 installed on this new machine.
I do have the OpenLife server installed though. Once I can get a better handle on running and administering it, I'll think about hooking up to the grid, using a Linux based server machine.
Sita, you can set up an OpenLifeGrid account using the same name as SL, and use the very same SL viewer to log on.
Also using the same viewer are GiantGrid, OpenGrid, and a whole other slew of systems. All with the final intentions of being able to seamlessly connect and teleport back and forth with SL. Making the whole VR grid into a true globe.

Here is the grid list page http://opensimulator.org/wiki/OpenSim:Grids

Come on EA\Maxis, meet the challenge with Sims some damned number, and I'll think about coming back. Oh, and all of these softwares for the VR grid?
Free to download. Free to set up an account.
And, Free to roam and explore in.
Ahhh.
I think I see where the corporate boys, may have a small problem there.

Any how, it's raining and I'm going to gaze joyfully out the window for a while.
Might even go do a happy puppy dance in the paddocks.

See you all later.

Is OpenSim an attempt to create a world like Second Life, but in an open-source kind of environment?
