That's it. The ocean waves get pushed closer together with a rising sea floor, and pile up, spill into each other and become the classic storm surge. Nasty.
The ocean rollers can be massive but are still smooth mounds, not the kind of wave you see from shore. A really big storm wind can push the top off the wave and even break the wave top, white horses and foam streaks every where, but they are still rollers not a shore type breaking wave. Big storm? Stay away, way out to sea. Great big hills to go up and down, but you have to be in a pretty bad vessel not to make it through. Come near land, and the best, strongest ship, ever built, will be smashed. |

That splains it. Then this huge surge of water washes over the land and does a heck of a lot more damage than a single wave the same height would do.
